The rule of thumb: about $3.00 to $4.50 per centimetre of stump diameter, with a minimum call-out around $180 to $250. Hardwoods cost more than that band suggests and softwoods less, because a red gum or ironbark stump blunts teeth several times faster than a pine. Depth is the decision, not price.
Nearly every complaint about stump grinding traces back to the same thing. The stump was ground to whatever depth the machine happened to reach, nobody asked what was going on top, and eighteen months later there is a soft patch in the lawn, a sunken paver, or worse, a hairline crack across a new slab. The grinding itself was fine. The brief was never taken.
So we ask first. Lawn needs 150mm, because turf roots do not go deeper than that and anything more is money you are paying to move dirt. A garden bed wants 250 to 300mm so a new shrub has somewhere to go. Pavers and sand-set paths want 300mm plus the surface roots taken out along their run, because it is the roots that lift pavers, not the stump. And if a concrete slab, a shed footing or a pool shell is going over the top, grinding is simply the wrong tool and we will tell you to excavate instead.
That last one matters more than it sounds. A ground stump leaves the root plate in the ground, and organic matter rots. Under lawn that is harmless. Under a slab it becomes a void, and a void under concrete becomes a crack in concrete. Do I need a council permit to grind a stump in Cardinia Shire?
Generally no. Cardinia Shire's Tree Protection Local Law protects living trees, not dead stumps, so grinding what is already cut is not usually a permit matter. The permit question applies earlier, while the tree is still standing: a trunk circumference of 110cm or more at 1.4m above ground puts it in scope, and indigenous remnants are protected at any size. What happens to the woodchip and the hole?
One stump makes two to three times its own volume in chip, because the material fluffs as it is cut. The default is to rake it back into the hollow and mound it, since it settles over the following months.
