The most technically distinctive ground in the shire.
Koo Wee Rup sits on the old swamp, drained through the Koo Wee Rup Swamp drainage works and turned into market garden country laced with main drains. What is under your feet is peat and sand over clay, and it does four things to a stump job that no other part of Cardinia does.
Peat cuts easily, then slumps.
Peat is partly decomposed organic matter, and a stump grinder goes through it and through timber grown in it quicker than it does through heavy clay. On cutting time alone a Koo Wee Rup stump is one of the easier jobs in the shire.
The problem is what the ground does afterwards. Drained peat consolidates. It has been consolidating across the old swamp since the drains went in, and it is still going, which is why fence posts and shed slabs on this country move over the decades in a way they do not on the clay flats. Put a hole full of grindings into that, and two separate things are settling at the same time: the chip, which compacts over six to eighteen months as rain works through it, and the peat under it, which is not finished either.
The practical result is a backfill that behaves differently from the rest of the shire. In Pakenham or Officer clay a mounded backfill drops fifty to eighty millimetres and holds. Here the same mound keeps going and a patch that looked level at three months can be a visible dish at eighteen. Nobody is doing anything wrong when that happens. It is the ground.
What to do about it: two options and they are both legitimate. Cart the grindings off at $120 to $350 and backfill with clean topsoil at $80 to $220, which is the right answer if the spot is going back to lawn or a garden bed and you do not want to look at a hollow. Or mound the grindings far higher than looks sensible, accept a lumpy patch for a season, and top it up once at the twelve month mark. What does not work here is raking flush on the day. Sand blunts the teeth faster than the timber does.
People assume the hard part of grinding a stump is the wood. It is not. A set of carbide teeth chews through wood all day. What destroys them is grit, and the sand fraction in the Koo Wee Rup profile is exactly that.
Sand packs into the fissures of old bark and sits through the top few hundred millimetres of a root flare, so the cutting wheel is running through abrasive material for most of the pass rather than only meeting it at the edges. On a large old willow along a drain, or on a run of shelter belt, tooth wear is frequently the real cost of the job rather than the hours on site. That is the honest reason Koo Wee Rup work does not come out cheaper than clay work even though the cutting is quicker: the two effects cancel.
It is worth knowing because it also tells you something about quotes. A contractor pricing Koo Wee Rup work off cutting time alone is going to be surprised, and a surprised contractor either does a shallower grind than you paid for or comes back with a variation. The bands here are the same as everywhere: $180 to $280 under 300mm, $280 to $480 for 300 to 600mm, $450 to $800 for 600 to 900mm, and $800 or more past that, with each extra stump on the same visit costing thirty to fifty per cent less. Willows and poplars come back from the roots.
The drain lines through Koo Wee Rup are lined with willows and poplars, planted or self-established because both love permanently wet feet. Both are suckering species, and that single fact changes what grinding can and cannot achieve here.
Grinding removes the stump and the top of the root plate. The rest of the root system stays in the ground and dies off over roughly five to fifteen years depending on species and soil. For an oak or a gum that is the end of the story, because a dead root system does nothing except break down. For a poplar and for several willows it is not, because they can push new shoots from roots even after the stump is gone, and along a drain those root systems are extensive, since the tree grew with unlimited water and had no reason to stay compact. Shoots come up metres from where the trunk stood, often through a lawn or a vegetable bed.
There is no grinding depth that solves this. The honest position is that removing the stump ends the tree and starts a suckering problem you deal with separately, usually by mowing the shoots off repeatedly until the root reserves are exhausted, which takes a season or more, or by treating them. Anyone who tells you that grinding a poplar ends it is selling you the wrong job. The other suckering species worth naming are robinia and a few wattles.
Where the shoots are the actual complaint rather than the stump, and where roots are lifting a path or a slab edge, surface root removal is separate work priced at $60 to $150 per metre of root run. Where a slab, a shed or a service trench is going through the spot, grinding is the wrong method entirely and the root plate should be dug out, which is covered under full stump removal.
A high water table fills an excavation.
Drained is not dry. The whole point of the drainage works was to lower a water table that used to sit at the surface, and it did, but on the flats near the main drains it still sits high and it rises quickly after wet weather. An excavated hole that looks clean in the morning can have water in the bottom by mid afternoon.
That matters specifically for full excavation, which is the correct method whenever something is being built over the spot: a slab, a shed footing, an extension, a pool shell or a service trench. Excavation costs two to four times the grinding price anywhere, and here it also has a sequencing constraint. Dig, backfill and compact in the same visit rather than leaving an open hole overnight, and choose a dry stretch of weather rather than working three days after rain. It is manageable, it just cannot be treated as an afterthought.
The same water table is why the decision between grinding and excavating matters more here than elsewhere. A rotting root plate under a slab becomes a void and a void under concrete becomes a crack, and permanently damp ground does not slow that process down.
