Do old stumps attract termites in Pakenham?

That is a long way from the version used to sell stump jobs, where every stump on the block is treated as an emergency. What matters is how far the stump is from your house, how wet it is, and what protection the building already has.

What a stump is, in pest terms.

Subterranean termites live in the soil and forage through it looking for cellulose. When they find some, they feed on it and build mud workings back to the nest. A dead stump is a large lump of cellulose sitting in ground that holds moisture, with bark and root channels that make good shelter, so a stump is a plausible thing for them to find and use.

What a stump does not do is create termites. They are either foraging in your area or they are not, and if they are, a stump is one of several things they may encounter, alongside fence posts, buried timber form work left by a builder, an old sleeper retaining wall, firewood stacked against a shed, a timber garden edge and the structural timber in the house itself. Removing a stump takes one item off that list. It does not clear the list.

That distinction matters because stumps get sold on fear regularly, and the honest position is more useful to you. If you are dealing with a stump because it is in the way, because you are landscaping, or because it is close to the house and you would rather it was gone, those are all sound reasons. Treating grinding as a substitute for a pest inspection is where people go wrong.

The one-line version: a stump two metres from a house wall is a maintenance item worth dealing with, and the same stump thirty metres away in a back paddock is generally not worth spending money on for pest reasons alone. If it is not in your way and it is nowhere near the building, leaving it to break down is a legitimate choice, and it will provide habitat while it does.

The limit of what grinding does

Grinding removes the stump, not all the timber.

A grinder takes out the stump and the top of the root plate, generally to somewhere between 150 and 300mm below grade depending on what is going over the spot. Everything below and beyond that stays where it is. The lateral roots of a mature gum can run several metres out, and that timber dies and breaks down over roughly five to fifteen years depending on species and soil. Those same lateral roots are what lift concrete and paving on the way through, which is a separate job dealt with in tree roots lifting a driveway.

So grinding reduces the volume of buried timber near your house and removes the most concentrated part of it. That is a genuine improvement and a reasonable thing to do. It is not the same as removing the food source, and anyone telling you that grinding a stump makes a property termite-proof is overselling a wheel and a set of carbide teeth.

Where you genuinely want the bulk of the timber gone, excavation takes the stump and the root ball out whole rather than shaving the top off it. It costs two to four times the grinding price, it leaves a crater that has to be backfilled, and it is normally chosen for structural reasons rather than pest ones. One practical point that follows from this page and applies to every job: do not bank the grindings against the house. Damp organic material heaped against a wall holds moisture, can cover weep holes and can obscure the inspection zone that a pest inspector relies on. Spread it at the back of the block instead. How much termite pressure is there around Pakenham?

It becomes your problem in two situations: when the decayed material creates a soft void that collapses under a mower wheel or a foot, and when the tree is still standing and the decay is in the trunk or the root plate, which is a stability question for an arborist rather than anything to do with stump grinding.

Beyond fungi, an old stump is a reasonable place for ants to nest, for European wasps to take up residence in a hollow, for borers to work through the sapwood, and for rats and mice to shelter in the root channels. On acreage it can host snakes, particularly where it sits in long grass. Most of these are ordinary features of a rural or semi-rural block rather than reasons to spend money. They become reasons when the stump is close to the house, near a play area, or next to where the kids run barefoot.

If a stump is decayed enough that it is crumbling, grinding it is usually quicker and cheaper than a sound one, because the timber offers less resistance to the wheel. That shows up in the quote. What to do

If you actually suspect termites.

Book a licensed pest inspection and leave the stump alone until it has been done. That order matters. Breaking open an active nest, poking at mud workings or grinding the stump out scatters the colony and destroys the evidence an inspector would use to identify what is present and to work out whether the house is already affected. It also turns a diagnostic job into guesswork.

An inspector will look at more than the stump: the perimeter of the building, the subfloor if there is one, the slab edge, the weep holes, moisture sources and any existing management system. They will tell you whether treatment is warranted and what it involves. That is licensed work with its own training and insurance, and we do not do it. We grind and remove stumps.
